Paper topic: Prosthesis with neuromorphic multilayered e-dermis perceives touch and pain (Osborn et al., 2018)
Presenter: Eric Shiu (he / him)
What if prosthetic limbs could feel pain? Scientists use phantom pain and nerve stimulation into sensory feedback for prosthetics so amputees can feel the sensations that their prosthetics interact with. In this Journal Club, you will learn about how this new prosthetic tool is developed and future possibilities of this work in creating natural sensation for amputees. This is a great opportunity to explore new inventions and the cross interdisciplinary field between neurology and robotics.
Our Journal Club is a presentation based around a neuroscience-related paper of the presenter’s choice. Our aim is to provide skills on reading, analyzing, and understanding scientific literature. We will dig through the paper’s abstract, methodology, findings, figures, and implications. As such, it’s a great way to practice building scientific literacy and explore new topics within the field of neuroscience. Our Journal Club is also a great way to talk to some of our club officers, meet some of the rest of the Grey Matters community, and mingle with like-minded individuals who may not be in the club but are still interested in the topic. Meetings are held in-person and over Zoom.
Unlike many other Journal Clubs, no prior scientific knowledge nor prior reading of the paper are required. Of course, it’s great to take a peek at the paper beforehand. Regardless, this is a judgment-free zone hoping to foster curiosity and learning, regardless of your educational background. Asking questions during these sessions are always welcome and encouraged!
Journal Club typically meets every other week based on presenter availability. During dead week and finals, there will be no Journal Club.
If you’re entering production for the first time on the Grey Matters Journal Production or Snippet teams, attending at least one Grey Matters Journal Club meeting is mandatory. This is to learn how to communicate complex topics and research papers to the public in a concise and understandable manner.
If you’re interested in presenting, please fill out our Presentation Interest Form and check out our Journal Club Presenter Guide!
